BA Information Design students shine at the prestigious international D&AD Student Awards

Posted on 24 July 2008

This year, three final year BA Information Design students at the University of Pretoria were short-listed for the annual D&AD Student Awards. The D&AD Awards, commonly known as the Yellow Pencils are one of the most internationally respected and prestigious creative awards for the design and advertising industries. The 2008 D&AD Student Awards results were officially announced at the D&AD Student Awards Ceremony in London on 26 June.

The two Information Design students who scooped top awards for their work are Stephanie Larsen, who won a first prize for her work for the Virgin Atlantic Airways Design brief, and Sylvia McKeown, who picked up second prize for the MTV VIRUS Design brief. In addition to winning yellow pencils, the above mentioned students’ winning work will be featured as part of the 388 entries selected for the D&AD Student Annual, which represents the best work of the year from students in creative courses across Europe, Asia, North America and South Africa. A third Information Design student, Justine Pierce also received commendation for her work for the Ted Baker Packaging Design brief and her work will also feature in the student annual.

Between 2004 and 2007, five students from the Department of Visual Arts have had their work featured in the D&AD Student Annual. It is noteworthy that of these five, Steven Tu won first prize for the Web Design Category in 2005 and also received a yellow pencil.
