The Institute for Sports Research was established in 1979. The Minister of Sport of the time, said in his message that the establishment of the “Institute for Sports Research” (ISR) – the first of its kind in South Africa - in the Department of Physical Education at the University of Pretoria reflected exceptional initiative and vision. For self-preservation the SA Sporting Community would have to depend on knowledgeable and inspirational leadership and that sport should be accessible to the masses to ensure a healthy balance between selected- and mass participation. He urged national sporting bodies to support the ISR and furthermore encouraged the establishment of more institutes.
