Prof. Gerhard Coetzee (PhD Agric Econ) is the Specialist Advisor: Inclusive Banking at Absa (a prominent bank in South Africa, owned by Barclays PLC) and founder and Director of the Centre for Inclusive Banking in Africa ( He is also an Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development (University of Pretoria) where he established the first focused academic rural and agricultural finance programme in Southern Africa. At Absa he led the team that conceptualised, designed and established the Micro Enterprise Finance Unit, a first for commercial banks in the region.

He is now working with the Entry Level and Inclusive Banking area in the Bank to conceptualise and implement banking products and services for low-income and poor South Africans, emphasising low cost-to-client solutions and a branchless banking focus.  He is published widely and speaks on all aspects of development finance at local, regional and international conferences.  He worked in more than 22 countries in Africa and elsewhere, influencing policy, strategy and implementation in many settings.  He is a founder and active supporter of the African Microfinance Conference Series.  He was also recently appointed as the FinMark Trust Theme Coordinator for rural finance.  Gerhard is also the recipient of Prestige Awards for innovation (2010 – Gold) and community service (2008 - Bronze) from Absa Bank.
