Wildlife Research Theme: Wildlife and Environmental Health
Research focus areas:
1. Theileriosis in roan (Hippotragus equinus) and sable (Hippotragus niger) antelope - Prof L Prozesky leon.prozesky@up.ac.za
Control of theileriosis by immunization, and investigations of various other aspects of the disease including identification of the various tick vectors and natural resistance of the animals against various infectious agents

The establishment of new and safer drug combinations for capture and immobilization to facilitate the handling of free-ranging African wildlife
This programme is linked to the above programme and is designed to establish the mechanism of action and to describe the specific pharmacokinetics of these drugs and combinations of drugs

Characterization of the risks to vultures of frequenting vulture restaurants, and to limit their exposure to toxic substances at these sites. The project is a joint venture between the University of Pretoria, The Lion and Rhino Nature Reserve ( http://www.rhinolion.co.za/ ) and the Wildlife Biological Resource Centre (WBRC) of the National Zoological Gardens ( http://www.zoo.ac.za )
