Wildlife Research Theme: Wildlife and Environmental Health
 
Research focus areas:
1.      Theileriosis in roan (Hippotragus equinus) and sable (Hippotragus niger) antelope - Prof L Prozesky leon.prozesky@up.ac.za
Control of theileriosis by immunization, and investigations of various other aspects of the disease including identification of the various tick vectors and natural resistance of the animals against various infectious agents

2.      NSAID (diclofenac) poisoning in vultures - Dr Vinny Naidoo
This research is a joint venture between the Faculty, the De Wildt Cheetah, and Wildlife Research Centre (http://www.dewildt.org.za/,

Characterization of the risks to vultures of frequenting vulture restaurants, and to limit their exposure to toxic substances at these sites. The project is a joint venture between the University of Pretoria, The Lion and Rhino Nature Reserve (http://www.rhinolion.co.za/ ) and the Wildlife Biological Resource Centre (WBRC) of the National Zoological Gardens (http://www.zoo.ac.za )
