The University of Pretoria utilized the ScienceUnlimited platform to encourage thousands of high school learners to explore the exciting world of those who pursue Mathematics and Science beyond school level. This national event took place from 02 March 2009 06 March 2009 at the Tshwane Events Centre, Pretoria.

Sci-Enza, the oldest interactive Science Centre in South Africa and which resides within the University’s premises was well represented and prepared for the function. According to Science Communicator at Sci-Enza, Irene van Nugteren interactive hands-on exhibits as well as brain teasers and puzzles were available at the display area for the learners to learn fundemental scientific principles in exciting ways.

“The learners had lots of fun solving the brainteasers and puzzles at the Sci-Enza exhibition space. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak to many children about their hopes and dreams for the future and to tell them about the opportunities offered by the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria,” says van Nugteren.

Fellow Sci-Enza science communicators Puleng Tsie and Portia Motheo reinforced van Nugteren’s emphasis in stating that there is still a big need for science exposure, whether at a primary or secondary level.

“It is somewhat disturbing to see the lack of basic fundemental science principles in so many learners, especially from the rural communities. The dissemination of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Education still has a long way to go. What is of comfort is the University of Pretoria’s commitment to supporting science awareness and events such as these because they are filling a vast chasm,” concludes Tsie and Motheo.
