In July 2012, UP students Johan Ferreira and Judy Coetzee from the Department of Statistics attended the Pre World Congress Meeting for Young Researchers in Probability and Statistics, held at the prestigious Koē University in Istanbul, Turkey.

They attended lectures focusing on advanced statistical topics, including random Poisson measuring, high dimensional modelling, stochastic cancer lifetime analysis, and spatio-temporal models and their applications. They also used the opportunity to network and meet similar young minds from across the world.

Both students, together with Prof Andriëtte Bekker and Prof Kotie Roux, participated in the World Congress in Probability and Statistics hosted by the Bernoulli Society, also held in Istanbul. UP was well represented at the Congress, where each of the participants gave a lecture, presenting their collaborative research to the attending statistics community with great success. Both students and professors returned with new ideas – with the added hope of inspiring a new research-driven effort in the Department in due course.
