Die Fakulteit Veeartsenykunde se prof Darryn Knobel streef na die uitwissing van hondsdolheid in Afrika by wyse van ín nuwe benadering tot hondsdolheidnavorsing. Hondsdolheid eis jaarliks die lewens van duisende mense op die vasteland, maar vir die eerste keer in dekades blyk die uitwissing van hierdie verwoestende siekte deur die gebruikmaking van bewysgebaseerde navorsing moontlik te wees. Knobel gebruik ín eenvoudige metode gebaseer op ín begrip van demografie om die inentingsdrumpels te bepaal wat vir die uitsterf van hondsdolheid vereis word.

Drie renosters word elke dag in Suid-Afrika deur stropery verloor. Teen hierdie tempo sal daar teen 2020 geen wilde renosters in die land oor wees nie. Die wÍreld moet besef dat dit lank reeds veel meer as stropery is. Dit gaan nie net meer oor die persoon wat oortree deur ín dier dood te maak om sy gesin te kan voed nie. Dit is georganiseerde misdaad en ín oorlog wat ons besig is om te verloor.

Die mens se hondevriend gaan help om die misterie van mensesiektes te ontrafel deur ín studie wat binnekort by UP se Fakulteit Veeartsenykunde gaan begin. Prof Andrew Leisewitz gaan ín studie oor hondesiektes onderneem wat hopelik tot 'n beter begrip van mensesiektes soos malaria en veelvuldige sklerose sal lei en moontlik meer doeltreffende behandelings sal oplewer. In sy benutting van dieremodelle om meer oor hierdie mensesiektes te wete te kom, fokus Leisewitz op twee navorsingsgebiede, naamlik ʼn siekte wat deur bosluise oorgedra word, te wete bosluiskoors (soms galkoors genoem) en ʼn virussiekte in honde, te wete hondesiekte.

Die pluimveebedryf lewer ín aansienlike bydrae tot die Suid-Afrikaanse ekonomie, sowel as tot nasionale voedselsekerheid. Pluimveeproduksie het in 2011 vir 22,2% van alle landbouproduksie en 45,5% van diereprodukte gesorg.

At the same time, the building project provides for the creation of facilities where students can learn and practice certain skills. Funds for this project were secured from the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Nelson Mandela sacrificed most of his life for his country and its people by serving others. He wants South Africans to follow his example, using just 67 minutes of our time. Although Mandela Day was celebrated on 18 July, the Faculty of Veterinary Science has decided to launch a two-week long project called OP 4 MADIBA in support of Mandela Day stretching from 22 July to 2 August 2013.

The project, in collaboration with Community Engagement staff, will be divided in two phases over the two weeks and is aimed at collecting donations for a disadvantaged or poor-resource entity such as an old-aged home.

The new PDMA-UP Poultry Research Chair in the Faculty of Veterinary Science was recently launched by the Faculty and the South African Poultry Association (SAPA). This exciting collaborative partnership aims among other things, at conducting research on poultry diseases that have an impact on our economy.

The first incumbent of this Chair, Prof Celia Abolnik, who was recently appointed by the Production Animal Studies Department, will be conducting research projects in conjunction with the Poultry Disease Management Agency (PDMA), the government as well as other relevant stakeholders.

The Department of Paraclinical Sciences of the Faculty of Veterinary Science is not only expanding its horizons, it is also digging deeper into the past. Dr Fritz Huchzermeyer, an extraordinary lecturer in the Department, was a co-author of an article that was recently published in the prestigious journal, Nature.

The work was done in collaboration with paleontologists in China. This publication reported the preservation of ovarian follicles in Mesozoic birds from China and the early evolution of avian reproductive behaviour. Crocodilians and birds are closely related to dinosaurs and are, therefore, ideal models to explain the reproductive behaviour of these extinct animals.

The brand-new, modern student accommodation that was officially opened by the University of Pretoria at the Onderstepoort Campus on 22 February 2012 will contribute to the Universityís plans to significantly expand its Faculty of Veterinary Science. This was according to Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria and also the keynote speaker at the event.

The Section Diagnostic Imaging in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Science launched its newly installed Computed Radiology (CR) and digital archiving system on Friday 22 June 2007. This means that 95% of images generated by radiology will be filmless.
