Alexis, a three year old Bull Terrier owned by Mr Colin Bohler, recently became the first bitch in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) of the Faculty of Veterinary Science to be artificially inseminated with frozen-thawed semen deposited in her uterus by means of a transcervical endoscope purchased by the hospital.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science recently hosted its annual Faculty Day, an event that provides its researchers an opportunity to present the results of their work and share it with colleagues and peers. A total of 18 oral and 13 poster presentations were on this year’s programme.

The prestigious Sir Arnold Theiler Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof Marian C Horzinek, Professor Emeritus of Virology and Viral Diseases of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University and former Director of the Graduate School of Animal Health, Utrecht University.

Exciting new additions to the Faculty of Veterinary Science

The increased intake of BVSc (University degree in Veterinary Science) students in the Faculty of Veterinary Science provides some challenges on the Onderstepoort campus. Therefore the Faculty has embarked on a new building project to accommodate the larger numbers.

At the same time, the building project provides for the creation of facilities where students can learn and practice certain skills. Funds for this project were secured from the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Faculty launches its two week long OP 4 Madiba project

Nelson Mandela sacrificed most of his life for his country and its people by serving others. He wants South Africans to follow his example, using just 67 minutes of our time. Although Mandela Day was celebrated on 18 July, the Faculty of Veterinary Science has decided to launch a two-week long project called OP 4 MADIBA in support of Mandela Day stretching from 22 July to 2 August 2013.

The project, in collaboration with Community Engagement staff, will be divided in two phases over the two weeks and is aimed at collecting donations for a disadvantaged or poor-resource entity such as an old-aged home.

The new PDMA-UP Poultry Research Chair in the Faculty of Veterinary Science was recently launched by the Faculty and the South African Poultry Association (SAPA). This exciting collaborative partnership aims among other things, at conducting research on poultry diseases that have an impact on our economy.

The first incumbent of this Chair, Prof Celia Abolnik, who was recently appointed by the Production Animal Studies Department, will be conducting research projects in conjunction with the Poultry Disease Management Agency (PDMA), the government as well as other relevant stakeholders.

The Department of Paraclinical Sciences of the Faculty of Veterinary Science is not only expanding its horizons, it is also digging deeper into the past. Dr Fritz Huchzermeyer, an extraordinary lecturer in the Department, was a co-author of an article that was recently published in the prestigious journal, Nature.

The work was done in collaboration with paleontologists in China. This publication reported the preservation of ovarian follicles in Mesozoic birds from China and the early evolution of avian reproductive behaviour. Crocodilians and birds are closely related to dinosaurs and are, therefore, ideal models to explain the reproductive behaviour of these extinct animals.

Dr Paul van Dam, Faculty Manager of the Faculty of Veterinary Science is a man of many talents and recently his first book about endurance riding, “The Spirit of Endurance. Your 101 guide to endurance riding in South Africa”, was published by Kejafa Knowledge Works.

The coffee table book with a classy glossy finish is widely distributed by big commercial chain outlets such as CNA and was done in conjunction with Ms Anzel Potgieter who did the photography for the book.
