Dr Oosthuizen was successful in obtaining NRF SA-China cooperation programme funding for a project entitled "Molecular characterization of undescribed Theileria and Babesia spp that occur in cattle and buffalo, and diagnostic assay development". The principle investigator in China is Prof Junlong Zhao from the Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan. Funding was awarded for a three year period.

Foreign and emerging animal diseases course: University of Cambridge

For the third year in succession, the Cambridge Infectious Diseases Consortium (CIDC) organized a course for 5th year veterinary science students on foreign and emerging animal diseases, with special reference to the wildlife-domestic animal-human interface in southern Africa. To achieve this objective, a team of 4 veterinarians from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort presented lectures during a week-long course on high impact infectious diseases to familiarize students to diseases that they may encounter during their future careers. The diseases included during the course were selected on the basis of its current and possible future socio-economic importance for the United Kingdom and neighbouring countries.

The Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD) started collaboration with the Department of Antibiotics, National Veterinary Institute (SVA), Sweden, in 2005 under the umbrella of the Joint Swedish-South African Bilateral Scientific Agreement funded respectively by SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency) and NRF (South Africa). SVA was founded in Stockholm in 1911. In 1978 the Institute moved to Uppsala, and today personnel from SVA work within all fields of veterinary medicine.
