Prof Don Cowan, an international researcher of note and the former Director of the Institute Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was appointed from 1 May to lead the newly established Centre for Genomics at the University of Pretoria. The Centre is essentially a virtual platform that facilitates and hosts the Institutional Research Theme (IRT) for Genomics.
On Tuesday, 15 May 2012, Ms Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, presented the Annual Helen Kanzira Memorial Lecture at the University of Pretoria.
Sabine Petsch, an honours student in French and Visual Studies at UP, will be travelling to Paris at the end of May to receive the first prize at the awards ceremony for the Espace en Jeu (Space in Play) competition that was organised by the Observatoire de l’Espace du CNES (Space Observatory of the National Centre for Spatial Studies).
The Centre for Mediation in Africa will convene its second Senior Government Mediation Training Workshop at the University of Pretoria from 10 to 13 July 2012. The workshop is aimed at government officials at the level of ambassador and first political secretary. The bulk of the participants will be from African countries.
Prof Deon Meiring of the Department of Human Resource Management has been selected by the Europe & South Africa Partnership for Human Development (EUROSA) Consortium Selection Committee for a staff exchange scholarship in the framework of the EUROSA programme.

On 11 May 2012, the Department of Nursing Science of the University of Pretoria celebrated the annual International Nurses Day, as well as the inauguration of selected members into the prestigious Africa Honor Society for Nurses.
