GENERAL INFORMATION ON COURSES

The Centre for Contextual Ministry presents a series of need orientated courses for pastors and other leaders in ministry. The themes of the courses are derived from regular research of the most pressing needs that pastors encounter. In this way the Centre ensures that the content of courses remains relevant to the questions and needs of the day.

THERE ARE THREE GROUPS OF COURSES, NAMELY:

• Advanced courses: To enrol for an advanced course, a Grade 12 and at least a two or three year diploma or a university degree is required.

• Basic courses: To enrol for a basic course, at least Grade 10 or equivalent is required. Persons without Grade 10 or equivalent are required to first do the introductory courses, see page 35-42. No previous training is required for persons who want to enrol for the introductory courses.

Note: Persons who are entitled to enrol for the basic courses directly (i.e. persons with Gr 10 or higher) but who did not receive any theological training in the past, are encouraged to do the introductory courses first in any case, even though it is not required according to the rules.

• Seminars and workshops: Most seminars and workshops are open to everybody irrespective of their level of prior learning. There are a few exceptions, though, where specific admission requirements have been set.

HOW TO REGISTER:

The registration date is one month prior to the starting date of the course.

You can register for a course by completing a registration form which must then be mailed or faxed to us together with proof of payment. Contact details are provided at the back of this brochure. (If there is no registration form in this brochure, please contact us at 012 4204951/2). You can also register online. A registration form is available on www.ccm.up.ac.za.

FEES: The prices of the different courses are shown where the detail of the courses is discussed.

PAYMENT:

• One and two year courses: 50% of the course fee with registration; the balance at the beginning of the second contact week (or third contact week in case of a two year course).

• Short courses and workshops: Full course fee with registration.

• Cancellation fee: R250.00 for one and two year courses; R150.00 for short courses.

The proof of payment, plus the name of the course you are registering for, must be faxed to 012 420 2000/Attention Suki van Jaarsveld.

Note: No person can be registered without a completed registration form and proof of payment.

DURATION OF COURSES:

Advanced long courses: Four of the advanced long courses are offered over two years. During the two years, there are five weeks of class attendance as well as prescribed books to read and assignments to complete. Two of the advanced courses are offered over one year with two weeks of class attendance. See information below.

Advanced short courses: These courses are offered over three days.

Basic courses: Basic courses are offered over one year, with two weeks of classes to attend over a period of about six months. The two introductory courses are also offered over one year, but more weeks of contact tuition are involved (see below).

Seminars and Workshops: Normally only one day.

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL CREDITS: Academic credits (Training Units/TU) are awarded to students who successfully complete a course. The number of credits are determined by the number of hours in class, the quality of assignments (homework) and the evaluation results. For students with a degree or whose prior learning has been approved by the University for this purpose, the academic credits count towards post-graduate studies. Training Units also qualify as Professional Units (PU) for pastors of churches who recognise CCM courses for this purpose. Students who do not participate in evaluation only receive Professional Units (PU).

Credits for Basic Courses:

Lasting one year: 6 TU

Lasting three days: 3 TU

Credits for Advanced Courses:

Lasting two years: 30 TU or 100 CDP points

Lasting one year: 12 TU or 50 CPD points

Lasting three days: 3 TU or 30 CPS points

One day seminars: 10 CPD points

METHOD OF TEACHING:

During contact weeks: Lectures and open discussions in a 'seminar setting' are used.

Preparation: Students need to prepare by reading prescribed material. For advanced courses the number of pages is 3200, and for M students, approximately 4500. For advanced short courses the number of pages are approximately 1000. For basic courses at least 500 pages of study material will be prescribed.

Evaluation: Evaluation is done through assignments (home work) as well as open book tests at the beginning and a brief 'memory teaser' at the end of each contact week. Tests are in written or oral format.

Participation: Students are invited to share their practical experience in class.

NUMBER OF COURSES PER YEAR:

Two or one year courses: Not more than two may be taken in one year. Short courses, seminars and workshops: No limitation.
