Publishing workshop held with the aim to boost research output

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences hosted a publishing productively workshop from 21 to 25 January 2013 at the Farm Inn in Pretoria.

Nineteen staff members of the Faculty attended the workshop. Participants were divided into groups, consisting of three persons per group, where peer reviewing of each of the papers took place. Senior researchers were grouped together. Senior faculty members also assisted the groups consisting of junior researchers.

Prof Henco van Schalkwyk, Head of the Department of Financial Management, and Ms Michelle Reyers, a staff member in the same department, attended the 23rd annual Southern African Finance Association (SAFA) conference that was held in Cape Town on 24 and 25 January 2013.

Prof Van Schalkwyk won the the Alexander Forbes prize for the best research presented at the SAFA 2013 conference relating to investment management or behavioural research on retirement fund members' decision-making.

Joint research project between UP and Swedish university concludes

From 30 January to 3 February 2013, 12 colleagues from the Jönköping University in Sweden, including three visiting scholars, Prof Mats Granlund, Prof Rune Simeonsson and Prof Ana Pinto will visit the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) to conclude a three-year long collaborative research project. A two-day workshop will be held entitled ‘Children with disability: Focus on human rights and intervention’, as well as collaborative small-group meetings between the Centre for AAC staff and PhD students and their Swedish peers to finalise joint publications.

More than 10 000 first year students accompanied by family and friends flocked to the University campuses on Saturday 26 January for UP’s annual Welcoming Day. The Welcoming Day programme on the Hatfield Campus included the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Cheryl de la Rey’s welcoming speech in the Amphitheatre which was packed to capacity for all three sessions. Proceedings in the Amphitheatre were relayed to the Musaion auditorium which accommodated the overflow of attendees.
