More than 10 000 first year students accompanied by family and friends flocked to the University campuses on Saturday 26 January for UP’s annual Welcoming Day. The Welcoming Day programme on the Hatfield Campus included the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Cheryl de la Rey’s welcoming speech in the Amphitheatre which was packed to capacity for all three sessions. Proceedings in the Amphitheatre were relayed to the Musaion auditorium which accommodated the overflow of attendees.

The University of Pretoria opened its doors for 2013 for students with the annual Welcoming Day for first-year students on 26 January. New students and their guests attended the day and were welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Cheryl de la Rey. Mr Tshiamo Maimane, a first-year student in Civil Engineering, planted a tree that represents the year group, and symbolises the new group of students who will themselves become alumni. Three Crossberry trees (Grewia occidentalis) were planted by Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Mr Leon de Kock, who represented the TuksAlumni Board, and Mr Tshiamo Maimane.
UP student awarded a PhD scholarship for research on climate change

Melissa Lazenby, a former student in the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology at the University of Pretoria, was recently awarded a full scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. The prestigious, fully funded PhD Peter Carpenter African Climate Change Scholarship is awarded to top academic African citizens to build capacity in climate change research and related skills within the continent.

The University of Pretoria men’s student team has won the 2012 University Sport South Africa Football National Club Championships, held from 3 to 7 December at the University of the Western Cape. This is Tuks’ third championship win in ten years, following their previous victories in 2003 and 2004.
Geoinformatics degrees receive accreditation from PLATO

The South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO) has accredited the University of Pretoria's Geoinformation Science (GISc) degrees. The accreditation was performed through a self-review, which was evaluated by the PLATO Education Advisory Committee. The BScHons Geoinformation degree received accreditation for complying with the requirements for registration as a professional GIScience practitioner, whereas the BSc Geoinformation degree was accredited for complying with the requirements for registration as a GISc Technologist.

The children’s theatre production for 2013 by the Department of Drama of the University of Pretoria is the well-known tale of Pinocchio. Come and share in the adventures of Pinocchio, the cute, naughty wooden marionette carved by the marionette maker Ghepetto from a very special log of wood. There is a mysterious Blue Fairy that appears to Pinocchio in many different guises to warn him about dangerous things. Meet his duck friend Gina who tries to look after him, the sly fox and the dim-witted cat who want to steal all his money, and the bad-tempered policeman who chases him.

The Department of Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria is hosting an exciting continuing professional development (CPD) workshop on 7 March 2013, during which local and international expert presenters will provide an update on the latest developments in ear and hearing telehealth. The keynote speaker will be Prof Robert Eikelboom from the University of Western Australia, who is also a senior researcher at the Ear Science Institute in Australia.

The University of Pretoria Law Clinic’s Research and Short Courses Section, in collaboration with Feasibility (Pty) Ltd, conducted research for the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) on the policy and objectives of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. The dti intends to amend the legislation and commissioned the research team with the mandate to analyse the policy upon which the National Credit Act was founded and to develop such policy with the view of effecting amendments to the Act.
