Female crickets fall for serenades of younger males

Female crickets prefer the serenades of younger males. The findings defy a well-established theory that females prefer older males because their longevity shows they have good genes. This idea was largely unproven, says Luke Verburgt of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. And once he put it to the test using field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus), he found it isn't accurate.

Tuks Rag procession engulfs eastern Pretoria

The streets of Pretoria were buzzing with about 7 000 students who were parading and flaunting their colourful floats during the main RAG procession on Saturday 12 February 2011. The event also drew lots of community members who were giving out donations to excited students. At the final judging, this year's float competition was won by the men's residence Olympus and the women's residence Erica. Their float's theme was about the discovery of electricity.
