Prof. Sunil Maharaj of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering and Mr. Kahesh Dhuness, postgraduate student, won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Outstanding Paper Award for their paper entitled "A cognitive radio application of OM-OFDM for implementation in DVB-T2" at the recently held IEEE Africon'11 Conference.

On 22 September 2011, the Orange Cruyff Court at the University of Pretoria's Mamelodi Campus was launched by the Ambassador for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, His Excellency Mr André Haspels. The government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Royal Netherlands Football Association donated the Cruyff Court to the University of Pretoria as part of their 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Project.

Professor Hein Willemse of the Department of Afrikaans at UP has been the editor of the literary journal Tydskrif vir Letterkunde since 2003. The journal's 75th birthday was celebrated on the 8th of September 2011 with a small function held in the Merensky library. It is not only the oldest literary journal in South Africa, but on the African continent.
