The BComHons (Marketing Management) group was challenged to create a marketing communication campaign for the Atterbury Theatre. This took place during a visit to the Atterbury Theatre in August 2013.

Mrs Paulette Reyneke, Atterbury Theatre Manager, provided the students with background information on the theatre and its activities. The marketing challenge was specifically targeted at the corporate market and integrating social media into the campaign.

Strong educational links between Azerbaijan and SA discussed

Talks about the development of strong educational links between the republics of Azerbaijan and South Africa took place at the Tourism Management Division in the Faculty Economic and Management Sciences.

Prof Dr Jafar Jafarov, Rector of the Azerbaijan Tourism Institute, the first wholly tourism-focused university in Azerbaijan, visited the Division to discuss the foundation of strong reciprocal links between the two universities for an exchange of academic staff and students up to doctorate level as well as collaborative tourism-research projects.

Prof Cheryl de la Rey, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, together with Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Mduduzi Manana, turned the sod for the start of a number of construction projects to expand infrastructure at the University’s Faculties of Health Sciences and Veterinary Sciences. These infrastructure extensions were made possible by the grant from the Department of Higher Education and Training’s National Skills Fund, and will enable an increase of the student intake in both the above faculties.

Opinion piece: September is Deaf Awareness Month in South Africa

Helen Keller said deafness is a worse misfortune than blindness because blindness separates us from things whilst deafness separates us from people. Deafness is not a loss of life but the loss of access to life through the natural means of hearing as the key to communication.

Loss of hearing is classified across degrees of severity and across the frequencies (pitch) of the sounds humans can hear. Deafness commonly refers to the severe and profound degrees of hearing loss but any degree of loss is bound to cause some form of disability.
