The Department of Civil Engineering has established a reputation in support of the development and maintenance of civil infrastructure within and outside South Africa. Graduates of the Department are sought after globally and many are working well beyond our borders.
The UP Civil Engineering Department has produced about 40% of all civil engineers in South Africa over the past 50 years. Many of these engineers have made major contributions to the development and wealth creation in South Africa over these years. We are proud of this history and are building on these achievements of the past with a new vision and strategic direction for the future.
In 2011, the Department had over 900 undergraduates studying and the first-year intake was 440, with approximately 29% in the whole department categorized as previously disadvantaged individuals (PDI), attesting to the Department's hard-earned reputation for excellence.
The Department is also very involved in “continuing education” and offers a host of postgraduate courses in various civil engineering fields. Currently, there are over 210 students enrolled in a variety of these courses, many of whom are nationals from neighbouring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.
Whilst in the past the language of tuition was Afrikaans, demands of industry coupled with the changing demographics resulted in the official endorsement of tuition in the English language for undergraduate (BEng) courses in 2001. The policy of tutoring in the English language at postgraduate (MEng, PhD) level was introduced earlier.
A BEng degree course is structured to fully meet and even exceed the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) which is the stepping stone for registration as a professional engineer. Consequently, a BEng (Civil) degree form the University of Pretoria is a recognized qualification for working as an engineer well beyond the borders of South Africa.

South African law professor to report to the United Nations on Lethal Robots - 16/05/2013
South African human rights law professor, Christof Heyns, will submit a widely anticipated report on Lethal Autonomous Robots (LARs) to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council on 29 May 2013.
Prof Heyns, from the University of Pretoria (UP), was appointed as UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions in 2010. During last year, he conducted worldwide research on the question whether states should be allowed to use LARs - weapons that, once deployed, can use lethal force without further human intervention - during war, or peace.

Judges from five African countries (Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda) joined participants from 20 other African countries for a course on socio-economic rights, presented by the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria from 6 to 10 May 2013.
