About studying Food Science

What is food science?

Food Science is the scientific understanding of the composition of food under various conditions. It comprises of  multidisciplinary subjects involving a combination of several sciences and a knowledge of the composition of food materials and their physical, biological and biochemical behaviour, including:

  • interaction of food components with each other and/or with other elements or materials (e.g. oxygen, packaging materials)
  • nutrition
  • enzymology
  • microbiology
  • toxicology
  • the effects of manufacturing, processing and storage.

What is food technology?

Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution and the use of safe, nutritious and wholesome food.
 

What is nutrition?

Nutrition deals with the basic concepts of human nutrition and the relationship of consumption of foods to health and well-being.
