Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Welcome to the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Metallurgical engineers change the world around them – by extracting metals from ores, by producing and shaping alloys, and by contributing to economic development. This Department similarly helps to shape and refine the people we work with. We have much to offer in terms of degree programmes, research opportunities and continuing education. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, research and industrial contacts and laboratory facilities.

Metals and minerals are of particular importance in South Africa, and our graduates are provided with skills which contribute to the further development of these resources.

In line with the aims of the University of Pretoria, we aim to develop world-class engineers who are also world-class people – our range of activities includes much more than just academic training. The Department co-hosts (with Mining Engineering) the Pretoria branch of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, which offers monthly seminars, while the Metallurgical Students' Association organizes a range of social and team-building activities.

Scholarship Opportunities in the Centre for Pyrometallurgy - 24/04/2013
From Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

The Xstrata Chair in Pyrometallurgical Modelling (XCPM) in the Centre for Pyrometallurgy at the University of Pretoria's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering invites B.Eng., B.Sc., M.Eng. and M.Sc. students to apply for studentships that are on offer. The XCPM group's activities are focused on research and innovation related to pyrometallurgical processes by applying a variety of mathematical modelling techniques. The XCPM is also committed to establishing and strengthening collaborative ties with other higher education institutions, research institutions and industry, both locally and internationally. It is through these collaborations that students can gain international exposure during their postgraduate studies.
