Values, Vision and Mission
(Inligting slegs beskikbaar in Engels)
All the activities within the Department (teaching, research, community engagement, as well as the development of human resources) must not only reflect, but also promote the values underlying the supreme Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. At the same time the Department must also be engaged in a critical discourse about the new constitutional order in particular, and the law in the general.
The Constitution of South Africa is not only supreme, but also a profoundly transformative document. As public law lawyers the members of the Department are committed to, and play a leading role in the substantive transformation of South African society with regard to openness, transparency, accountability, human dignity, equality, non-racism, non-sexism and the rule of law. All the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and certificate programmes offered by the Department must
- meet the demands of the legal profession;
- have a locally-relevant impact, taking into account the demands of the constitutional and political landscape and the legal environment in which it operates, as well as those of civil society and the community at large; and
- be internationally competitive (where possible and relevant), especially with regard to Africa in general.
