Department of Information Science

Welcome to the Department of Information Science

The Department of Information Science offers three main programmes with courses relevant to the trends of the information and knowledge age and economy, being Information Science, Multimedia and Publishing Studies. In the Information Science programme students also study Knowledge Management in depth, and there are various specialization options through electives (allowing students to concentrate more on technology, taking modules from the Department of Informatics as electives, or Information Science or Library Science, taking specific modules within this Department).

We are the largest department offering Information Science in the RSA; we are also the only
department in the country that offers Publishing Studies at undergraduate level (in addition to
postgraduate studies) and the only department that offers Multimedia (specifically Multimedia
Programming, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level). We value the currentness of our
knowledge and courses. In 2002, we became the first department, and University, to offer
postgraduate certificate courses in Competitive Intelligence, and Information and Knowledge
Management.

We are very proud of our relationship with the departments of Informatics and Computer Science – our sister departments in the School of Information Technology.
