Tydskrif vir Letterkunde

Tydskrif vir Letterkunde is the oldest existing literary journal on the African continent. The journal has been published under this name since 1951 and is a direct continuation of Die Jaarboek van die Afrikaanse boek (Yearbook of Afrikaans books) that was started by the well-known Afrikaans poets C. M. van den Heever (1902–1957) and T. J. Haarhoff (1892–1971) in 1936. Previous editors include figures like Coenie Rudolph and Professors Abel Coetzee, Elize Botha and Henning Pieterse. Since 2003 the journal is based in the Department of Afrikaans of the University of Pretoria with Prof Hein Willemse as editor-in-chief. Tydskrif vir Letterkunde positions itself as “a journal for African literature” and in addition to Afrikaans, peer-reviewed academic articles are also published in English, French and Dutch. Articles in the journal are included in the foremost international indexes.
