Dear Participant

The 4th South African Social Sciences Research Methodology Winter School registration is now open for all Masters and Doctoral students. For more details please contact Xandra de Fortier at alexdf@mweb.co.za.

Welcome to the 4TH SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL! This year again, the Universities of Pretoria and Johannesburg, together with the University of Basel in Switzerland, are presenting the annual Research Methodology Winter School to invest in human capital and to strengthen international and interdisciplinary research ties. We continue to offer four kinds of courses and workshops namely: research design, qualitative methods, quantitative methods and courses relating to a research career (e.g. project management, publishing, and career strategies). This year, participants can enrol in a stream which covers the introduction to statistics, which will enable them to take two successive courses that build on each other.

We aim to provide participants with opportunities for developing research skills, professionalization and building a research network that includes institutions and instructors as well as other course participants. Course participants will benefit in a number of ways. Firstly, competent instructors will introduce participants to various introductory or advanced research methods and techniques through lectures, exercises and assignments. Secondly, participants will be sharing working and thinking space with other researchers in such a way that critical thinking and application of the methods and techniques are fostered. Thirdly, they will be presented with opportunities to discuss their substantive research plans within a context that is likely to lead to the expansion of the participants' existing research network.

Unfortunately some courses have a limit on the number of participants that can be accommodated, but we hope to feature these courses again in the 5th SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL in 2013. Also for 2013, we are aiming to offer more courses and streams, some of which will be covering the course material of a regular semester course.

We wish you productive and enjoyable encounters during the 4th SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WINTER SCHOOL. Please see the overview page to get an idea what is on offer this year.

Max Bergman, Irma Eloff, Robin Samuel and Michelle Finestone
