Bachelor of Nursing Science (B Cur I et A)

 Background

To keep abreast of the latest technology and trends in any profession, post-basic education is encouraged by all tertiary institutions, and more so by the University of Pretoria. The Department of Nursing Science at the Faculty of Health Sciences offers the Baccalaureus Curationis (Instructionis et Administrare) (B Cur I et A) degree, aimed at enabling nursing professionals to be a cut above the rest.

 Outlines of the courses

Specialisation in Nursing Education, Nursing Management and Community Nursing, as well as clinical courses (child nursing, emergency nursing, critical care nursing, neonatal nursing and operational theatre nursing).

 These courses are presented as first-year subjects of the above-mentioned degree. Programmes are presented as contact classes supported by paper-based workbooks. The lectures commence in the first week of February and are presented seven times per subject per semester. Contact classes will be presented in Pretoria only.

Non-clinical courses

The following subject combinations are required:

  • Nursing Education: Nursing Education Theory, Didactics of Nursing Education, and Nursing Dynamics
  • Nursing Management: Nursing Management, Business and Organisational Psychology and Nursing Dynamics
  • Community Nursing Science: Community Nursing Science and Nursing Dynamics

 Practicals

Community Nursing clinical learning practica of 320 hours are required, part of which is executed during a block at Prinshof Campus. The other courses have much less practica and are done informally as well as formally.

Duration of the programme

3 Years

 It is possible to complete all the subjects required for the registration of one qualification with the SA Nursing Council (SANC) in one year.

 Entry requirements

  • Matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
  • Proof of registration with the SANC as General Nurse
  • Midwife/Accoucheur is compulsory for Community Nursing Science
  • At least two years' applicable experience as registered nurse for the courses in Nursing Education and Nursing Management (This is not applicable if you want to register for Community Nursing only.)

Clinical Nursing Courses

The clinical fields of specialisation programmes are presented over a period of at least two years.

 The fields of specialization are:

  • Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Critical Care: General
  • Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Post-basic Neonatal Nursing
  • Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Emergency Nursing
  • Operating Theatre Nursing
  • Child Nursing Science

 Please note that these courses are not necessarily offered every year as the number of applicants per speciality determines the cost-effectiveness of the programmes.

 Subjects presented

  • First year: Clinical Nursing Science I, Systems of Nursing Practice I and Nursing Dynamics. The first year is a generic year for all clinical specialities.
  • Second year: Clinical Nursing Science II, Systems of Nursing Practice II and Nursing Science Practicals. The second year is the year of specialisation.

 Entry requirements

  • Matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
  • Proof of registration at the SANC as General Nurse
  • For Neonatal Nursing and Child Nursing, registration as midwife/accoucheur is also required
  • At least one year experience in the workplace relevant to the area of specialisation.
  • A post in the field of speciality at an accredited clinical facility with formal approval of studies by the particular clinical facility.

 These programmes are only presented in Pretoria and require weekly attendance approximately from February to June and the middle of July till the end of October.

 Medium of instruction

The medium of instruction is English, but students may write assignments, tests and examinations in either Afrikaans or English.

 Tuition fees

Approximately R2 400 per subject per year. A first payment of R3 000 as tuition fee is required on registration day.

Examinations

Examinations are written in June and November of each year.

Application

Prospective students can obtain an application form from the Client Service Centre at the University’s main campus in Lynnwood, Pretoria or phone (012) 420 3111 to request a form to be mailed to you. The following requirements must be met on application:

  • A fully completed application form
  • A certified copy of the matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
  • Certified copies of all SANC registration certificates
  • A copy of the 2010 or 2011 - SANC receipt (the 2012-receipt must be submitted at registration 2012)
  • A certified copy of the first page of your identity document
  • A marriage certificate or divorce order, if applicable
  • A letter from your employer, stating that you have permission to study

 The above is applicable to all first-time students as well as students who have interrupted their studies and still have an existing student number.
