Prof R Swanepoel: An important appointment at the Zoonoses Research Unit (ZRU)

Prof R Swanepoel was appointed as a Consultant on Biosafety and Biosecurity at the ZRU.

Formerly, Head of the Special Pathogens Unit and WHO Regional Collaborating Centre for Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers and Arboviruses, at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases;Johannesburg, South Africa, and Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand was appointed in the Zoonoses Research Unit, Department of Medical Virology, University of Pretoria in July 2011 as Consultant on Biosafety and Biosecurity. At various times a member and/or leader of 30 national and international committees, editorial boards and disease outbreak investigation and response teams. Over 195 scientific publications, 135 in international peer-reviewed journals, the remainder being book chapters, invited articles, plus government and institutional guidelines. Receiver of several international awards and honours including the Theiler Memorial Trust Award for contributions to Veterinary and Medical Science in Africa, in 2002, and Honorary Membership of the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, in 2007.
