The Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria will be hosting a conference on "Regional Governance of Migration and Social Policy: Comparing European and African regional integration policies and practices", on 19-20 April 2012.
International and regional migration has become a fundamental phenomenon of current political and social affairs. Besides the management of migration flows, which pose a number of challenges to national governance, the facilitation of intra-regional free movement requires important evolutions in regional social policies.
This conference, funded by the European Union, will analyse the important link between migration, social policy and regional governance by focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches in Europe and Africa. It brings together some of the world’s leading scholars in the field and the main representatives of civil society organisations and intergovernmental agencies.
Speakers will include Prof Luk van Langenhove (United Nations University, Bruges), Dr Alexander Betts (Oxford), Dr John Oucho (Nairobi) and Dr Guy Nono (Douala, Cameroon).
The event will be held in Room L1-76 of the UP Postgraduate Centre (Building 52 on the campus map).
