The Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies draws on a broad range of expertise from various disciplines, and has developed several courses for the purpose of introducing programme and project staff to a set of instruments to enhance mainstreaming of gender at policy, organisational and programme levels.

Course objectives

  • To provide the participants with the necessary conceptual, theoretical and contextual frameworks for enhanced understanding of gender, gender policy, gender mainstreaming and the state's obligations in terms of international conventions
  • To highlight key gender issues which contribute to the pervasive gender-based discrimination and violence in Africa
  • To introduce participants to a range of methodologies, tools and instruments to identify key gender issues, to integrate a gender perspective in the project management cycle and to monitor and evaluate interventions and programmes to promote and protect gender equality

 Outcomes

  • Enhanced understanding of gender concepts, constructs and methods
  • Enhanced understanding of the legislative and policy framework underlying gender mainstreaming in the region
  • Priorities and key issues / concerns and risks with regard to gender mainstreaming and the eradication of gender-based discrimination on a programme and project level

Process

Participatory, interactive seminars, in which theory and methods are deliberated based on practical examples and case studies

Who should enrol?

Government and non-government organisations, advocacy and women’s organisations, activists and research agencies, gender focal points, social development organisations, teachers and academic institutions

Accreditation

The programmes are provided by an accredited higher education provider. Up to 70% of the Skills Development levy is claimable at the relevant SETA.
