Law Clinic: Regional Court Divorce Project

In June 2011 the UP Law Clinic was approached by a Magister from the Pretoria Regional Court to assist unrepresented clients in divorce matters in the Regional Court. After some negotiations, the project started towards the end of June 2011.

Every Thursday, an attorney and candidate attorney from the UP Law Clinic man an office in the court. The clerks of the ‘divorce courts’ send clients that qualify for legal aid to the Clinic staff, where they are consulted with and assisted.

The influx of clients is much higher than originally anticipated, and it is expected that the number of clients approaching the clinic through this project will only increase. From the clinic’s perspective, it provides good potential training opportunities, especially for students and senior candidate attorneys. It also allows us to assist clients in a more efficient (and faster) manner, and to be involved in shaping the form and customs of the Regional Divorce courts.
