Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme
Programme objectives:
- Postdoctoral Fellowships granted annually on a competitive basis to attract excellent young researchers to UP.
Who should apply:
- Young researchers (up to 40 years of age) with a doctorate degree.
- PhD must have been attained within the past 5 years.
- Candidate should have no previous post-doctoral experience.
Details:
- Awarded for 1 - 2 years (second year dependent on satisfactory progress report).

Postgraduate Study Abroad Bursary Programme
Programme objectives:
- International study abroad at a UP partner institution to conduct research to the programme in which the post-graduate student or researcher is registered.
Who should apply:
- Masters and Doctoral degree students registered at UP.
- Full-time permanent UP staff members engaged in Masters or Doctoral degrees and who are registered at UP or elsewhere.
Details:
- Bursary can be from 2 weeks up to 1 year.
- Maximum of R50 000.

Thuthuka Programme through the NRF
Programme objectives:
- Promote the attainment of a Doctoral qualification and/or research development by early-career academics employed at SA universities;
- Promote the attainment of an NRF rating by early-career academics, in particular black and female researchers and persons with disabilities, or for those academics who have not been able to realise their potential due to family responsibilities.
Who should apply:
- The Thuthuka Programme offers three tracks: PhD track, Post-PhD track and NRF-rating track.
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of SA.
- Find specific eligibility criteria under 'Programme Manual' link below.
Number of calls per annum:
- One call per year.

Free-Standing Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme through the NRF
Programme purpose:
- To support candidates who would like to pursue postdoctoral research training in SA and abroad.
Who should apply:
- SA citizens who wish to undertake full-time research at institutions in SA or at approved institutions abroad.
- Outstanding candidates from abroad will be considered for full-time research in SA.
- Applicants must have obtained their PhD within the last 5 years.
Number of calls per annum:
- Typically one call per year
Deadlines (internal/external):
- 2013 deadline to be confirmed.

Notes:
- Value of the fellowship is a maximum of R120 000 per annum for post-doctoral research conducted in SA, and US$16 500 for post-doctoral research training abroad.
- Recipients of the grant may apply for a once-off mobility grant of R50 000.
