MAKE EVERY DAY A MANDELA DAY

We need your help. A call to action!

The University of Pretoria is committed to participation in the annual Mandela Day project. Last year we organised a very successful clean-up campaign around the Mamelodi Campus as part of an environmental awareness and recycling project.

This year the University is involved in a number of activities, some of which took place on Mandela Day, 18 July 2012. We would like to thank the staff and students who participated. Since the majority of students were on vacation on the former president’s birthday, the University’s official Mandela Day activity will only take place on Saturday, 28 July 2012. We have been approached by the Mononong Primary School in Mamelodi to assist them with painting the inside walls of 12 classrooms. The principal and staff of the school are committed to making a difference in the lives of their learners and the local community. The children are, potentially, future students of the University of Pretoria.

To prove our commitment to this worthy project, we need at least 120 volunteers from amongst the University’s staff and student corps to paint the walls of the 12 classrooms, which have not been painted in 30 years.

I appeal to staff and students to contribute towards making a difference in the lives of the educators and learners at the school by signing up for the project that will take place this Saturday, 28 July from 08:00 to 12:00. All we need is your time and energy. We will provide transport (if needed) and all the materials required.

To register, please click on this link http://web.up.ac.za/upmandeladay and complete the form. Once we have received all the registration forms, we will provide you with the information required to participate in the event.

Kindly register before 12:00 on Thursday, 26 July to enable us to make the necessary logistical arrangements, of which you will be informed on Friday morning.

Thank you once again to those who participated in the various faculty and departmental Mandela Day activities that have already taken place. I look forward to your participation in making the 28 July 2012 project a resounding success. The principal and staff of Mononong Primary School are excited about, and appreciative of our contribution.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Kind regards

Cheryl de la Rey
