OVUWA means (cultural) re-awakening and was first established in 1998 under the name "Tuks Africa Sings" but was later re-named UP Chorale. The current name is more in line with the purpose and character of the group which has grown by leaps and bounds since its formation.

To create a flagship performing group to serve as culture exchange space, and the promotion of diversity and excellence at the University of Pretoria and its environs through music, dance, poetry, drama and other traditional performance modes drawn from all cultures of South Africa.

Resource persons:

Members of the group are recruited from different cultures to act as resource persons and researchers into the performance modes of their own cultures which are then work-shopped and shared by the whole group. Professional performers are sometimes contracted to assist the group according to the material it is working with.
