 UP Mathematics and Science Programme officially launched

The University of Pretoria officially launched the UP Mathematics and Science Programme on the Mamelodi Campus on 24 March 2011. This programme, which was developed as a partnership between UP’s Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, its Faculty of Education and District Tshwane South of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDoE), forms part of the University’s community engagement initiatives.       >Read more...



Minister Naledi Pandor opens International Tribology Conference

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor, opened the 10th International Tribology Conference, Tribology 2011, at the UP Conference Centre on 5 April. In her address, the Minister referred to the importance of energy and savings in energy, and said that South Africa should be at the forefront of technology in this regard.

To the right is UP?s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Cheryl de la Rey. Professors Tonder and Bharat were the guest speakers at the conference.    
  


Japanese contribute to local UP projects

UP maintains good relations with various countries as part of its vision to be internationally competitive. Japan has recently made a significant contribution to learning and research at the institution when scientists of this country visited the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Furthermore, the Japanese Embassy made it possible for the University’s Vision 20/20 Clinic to purchase much-needed ophthalmic examination equipment with a generous donation.       >Read more...  


Mamelodi Campus provides an indispensible service to the community  

The University’s Mamelodi Campus has been developed as the hub of UP’s community engagement activities. The University’s assistance to the Mamelodi community has always been extensive and includes a law clinic, a psychological clinic, and a small business and entrepreneurship clinic. This support is now being expanded with the launch of two new initiatives: an animal health clinic and an occupational therapy clinic, which will benefit both students and members of the surrounding community.      >Read more...

Academic staff members at the University are continuously expanding their personal lists of achievements. Prof Stella Nkomo, professor in the Department of Human Resource Management, was awarded a B1-rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and Prof Robin Crewe, Vice-Principal was elected to head the Network of African Science Academies.    >Read more...

Students do UP proud

The most recent achievements by students of UP illustrate the institution’s philosophy to produce well-rounded students. On the academic side, Calayde Davey was chosen as a finalist for the 24th Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Award. Toyota SA partners with the Centre for Responsible Leadership 

On 10 March, the Centre for Responsible Leadership at UP took possession of a Toyota Prius sponsored by Toyota SA. The sponsorship of the Prius indicates Toyota’s support for the development of the next generation of responsible leaders.    >Read more...

Centre for Inclusive Banking in Africa launched 

Financial inclusion towards economic development and the mitigation of poverty are some of the biggest challenges of our country, the region and the continent. The Centre for Microfinance at the University of Pretoria, which has been contributing towards this inclusion since 2004, was relaunched as the Centre for Inclusive Banking in Africa on 23 March.     >Read more...

Alumnus presents UP with special gift

Rev Bertus van Wyk was responsible for a historical moment in Kya Rosa when he gave the Faculty of Theology a framed photo collage of himself and his fellow students, taken in 1935. Rev Van Wyk (who turns 99 this year) and his children presented the collage to Prof Johan Buitendag, dean of the faculty, and Prof Julian Müller, deputy dean, during a luncheon function.     >Read more...
