He has been researching how governments in the South attempt to control rural migrants entering the burgeoning cities and the response of the poor to these policies. His PhD thesis in social history is an ethnographic study of the poor highlighting the continuing fragility of their claim to the right to permanent residency in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
He has published on urban poverty, the housing crisis, peri urban squatting, informal economy and challenges faced by the Indian minority in Zimbabwe.
