Public Conversations 2010:
What makes us South African?

Event date: 25 October 2010

Will South Africans continue to fly the flag as avidly as they did during the World Cup, and if so, what will it mean? What truly makes us South African and how has the post-apartheid state succeeded, or failed, in fostering an inclusive national identity? We will address these questions by looking at how ethnicity, language, and class combine in the making of the South African identity, and how this national project is unsettled by the country's troubled reaction to immigrants and refugees.
