Research interests

Serena's research focuses on the ever-increasing volumes and distribution of geographic information. The research is multi-disciplinary in nature, mainly within Geographic Information Science and Computer Science. Serena received her PhD on data grids, spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) and address data. Specific research interests include spatial data infrastructures, addressing, geographic information standards, geospatial web services and open source for geospatial software.

A current collaboration with the University of Namibia in Windhoek (Namibia) looks at different spatial data infrastructure modelling approaches for a number of African countries. A recent collaboration with the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland under the South Africa/Poland agreement on cooperaton in science and technology investigates volunteered geographic information for spatial data infrastructures and gepoportals. A number of projects have been funded in past years, amongst others, by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Department of Trade and Industry (dti), AfriGIS, and the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Association.

As a member of the ‘Commission on Geoinformation Infrastructures and Standards' and the 'Commission on Open Source Geospatial Technologies' of the International Cartographic Association (ICA), Serena contributes to their research work. She is also a member of ‘WG IV/5 - Distributed, Web-based Geoinformation Services and Applications’ of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS).

Serena actively participates in international geographic information standardization efforts through the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) committee ISO/TC 211, Geographic Information/Geomatics, and nationally through the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) committee SC71E, Geographic Information. As chair of the Programme Maintenance Group (PMG) in ISO/TC 211 she coordinates efforts in the committee to ensure harmonization and consistency of standards and alignment with changing requirements and technological developments. Currently she leads the ISO 19160-1, Addressing Part 1: Conceptual model project. She was also the project lead for SANS 1883, Geographic information Addresses, published in 2009. In 2009, she received an award from the SABS for her work on SANS 1883.
