Staff members moving up the ladder

A number of staff members are on the move. Elize Kotze, the TuksNetball coach and 2010 TuksSport Coach of the Year, is preparing the Spar Protea Netball Team for the World Netball Championships in Singapore from 3 to 10 July. Prof Chika Sehoole of the Faculty of Education has accepted the position of head of the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies. Dr Quenton Kritzinger has been appointed as the new director of the BSc Four-year Programme in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Prof Berendien Lubbe of the Department of Tourism Management has been appointed to the board of the International Federation for Information Technology and Travel and Tourism.  

TuksNetball coach appointed national coach

Elize Kotze, the TuksNetball coach and 2010 TuksSport Coach of the Year, will prepare the Spar Protea Netball Team for the World Netball Championships in Singapore from 3 to 10 July. She will be assisted by Burtha de Kock, Prof Chipya and Reg Sharp.  

Elize joined the University of Pretoria as TuksNetball Head Coach in 2004. She is the heart of the club and the inspiration behind its excellent performance. Her passion and love for netball inspires all netball players to embrace their potential and become the best they can be. Her attention to individual development sets her apart from other team coaches. 

She develops the players and coaches at the club to become high performers on and off the netball court. In 2010 Elize coached the Gauteng North A team that won both the SPAR National Netball Championships and the NSA Merit Tournament. She also coached the Thunderbirds that came second in the national league and Tuks 1 that won the Gauteng North title.

BSc Four-year Programme gets new director 

Dr Quenton Kritzinger has recently been appointed as the new director of the BSc Four-year Programme in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The programme is presented on the University's Mamelodi Campus. 

Before his appointment he was a senior lecturer in the Department of Plant Science. Dr Kritzinger is very excited about the possibilities of the BSc Four-year Programme and says: “I regard this programme as an integral component of the success and future of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. It is fantastic to be part of a programme that provides a gateway to science and science-based programmes for students with potential.” 

Dr Kritzinger completed his PhD in Plant Pathology in 2005 and has received the Young Plant Pathologist Award from the Southern African Society for Plant Pathologists in 2002 and 2004.

New head of department appointed at Education Faculty 

Prof Chika Sehoole has accepted the position of head of the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies in the Faculty of Education as from 1 January 2011. He holds tertiary qualifications from the former University of the North, as well as the universities of the Witwatersrand and Essex. He obtained his PhD degree in 2002 with a thesis entitled Changing the wheel while the car is moving: restructuring the apartheid education departments. 

From April 2007 to March 2008 he was the Chief Director for Higher Education Planning and Management Support and between April 2008 and March 2010 he was the Chief Director for Higher Education Policy and Development Support at the Department of Education. Both were seconded positions from the University of Pretoria. In April 2010, he returned to the Faculty of Education at UP as associate professor. 

Prof Sehoole has been awarded the Rockefeller Postdoctoral Fellowship (2003/04), the Fulbright New Century Scholar Fellowship (2005/06), the NRF Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Exceptional Young Researcher Award of the University of Pretoria (2004). He currently has a C2-rating of the National Research Foundation.  

UP academic makes history 

Prof Berendien Lubbe from the Department of Tourism Management at the University of Pretoria has been appointed to the board of the International Federation for Information Technology and Travel and Tourism (IFITT). She is the first South African to be appointed to the board of this prestigious organisation. 

She specialises in tourism distribution and air transport in tourism and has a particular interest in developing the field of business and corporate travel. She was the proud owner of her own travel agency for a number of years before joining the academic world. Prof Lubbe is regularly invited to lecture at other universities in South Africa and overseas in countries such as the Netherlands and Finland on the topics of tourism distribution and trends in business and corporate travel.
