Prof Charles van Onselen
is a Research Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria. His interest lies in ways that the histories of southern African societies have intersected with developing social, economic and political structures elsewhere in the late 19th and early 20th century. In short, he wishes to understand how the ‘global is local and the local global’.
In emerging economies, where appetites for ideology exceed the capacity for state development, it is the task of historians and others to raise questions that highlight the complex origins of evolving societies and to subvert
the strictures of manipulative, race-based, nationalisms.
