Dr Carien Lubbe-De Beer

is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Psychology. Her research interest focuses on same-gendered (lesbian/ gay) families. Her research into the experiences of children growing up in lesbian families has received international attention. Carien is currently conducting research exploring the transition to parenthood of lesbian mothers, informing a broader project on the psychological well-being of same-gendered families. Utilising a positive psychological framework, attention are being paid to explore the strengths and resilience that same-gendered families display against the backdrop of heteronormativity. Carien loves qualitative methodologies, especially narrative research. Carien co-represents South Africa on INET (The International Network on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual concerns and Transgender matters in Psychology), hosted by the APA.
