Prof Steve Koch
His research interests lie within applied microeconomics with a focus on households, health economics and econometrics. He is currently supervising 5 PhD students and two M students. These students are investigating the impact of forestry programs on rural households in Ethiopia, the impact of free health care in South Africa, the impact of social grants on household size in South Africa, maternal health in Zambia and the changes in health care delivery, since the end of Apartheid in South Africa. He is also investigating the performance of multinomial fractional logit models, as well as the efficiency of African manufacturing firms.
Over the next five years or so, he will continue to investigate the effects of various South African social policies, especially within the context of health. In particular, he will extend the analysis of free health care to consider the impact of social grants on spending behaviour in the household. He also plans to investigate changes in the purchase of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages amongst South African households.
