Prof Elsa du Toit
Prof Elsa du Toit is Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Production and Soil Science in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Her main research interests include the development of plant propagation and cultivation protocols for potential multipurpose crops to be used in biofuel, food, and medicinal industries.
In the past six years, her research mainly focused on developing innovative systems in plant production, including micropropagation and conventional propagation protocols for tree species that are reliable and reproducible. Cultivation and post-harvest research were done in order to create and transfer innovations that will facilitate the establishment of sustainable plant production systems for rural communities and small-scale farmers. Research results on the identification of compounds that are implicated in graft compatibility and rooting will significantly enhance the potential successful domestication and commercialisation of economic potential tree species.
She has published more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles, two chapters, nine technical reports, and several governmental documents related to the above on biofuels.
Prof Du Toit has served as Vice-President (2003/04) and President (2005/07) of the Southern African Society for Horticultural Sciences (SASHS). She represented the society on the Board of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS) in 2007. She has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Plant Propagators’ Society (IPPS) Southern African Region since 2000, served as President (2001/02) and Past President (2003/04) for the IPPS SA, and is currently Second Vice-President.
