Prof John Dugard presented a research discussion on the 11 March 2011 at the Institute regarding the International Court of Justice: Costa Rica vs Nicaragua
In october 2010 Nicaragua invaded a small wetland falling within the territory of Costa Rica. Costa Rica brought a request for provisional measures to the International Court of Justice pending the determination of the boundary dispute between the two states. John Dugard was appointed as judge ad hoc by Costa Rica.
On 8 March the International Court gave an order that both states should withdraw their security forces from the disputed territory but that Costa Rica might continue to take steps to protect the environment of the territory.
John Dugard spoke about the dispute in the context of the present jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice.
This was followed by a question and answer session which covered a wide range of isssues relating to the International Court of Justice
