HHWRS Application Process - Research Projects

In order to conduct a research project at or from HHWRS, the following is required. More details on each of these steps can be seen by clicking on them.
  1. A full research proposal

  2. Approval letter of a relevant Research Committee

  3. Ethical approval for research involving animal subjects

  4. Ethical approval for research involving human subjects

  5. Approval to conduct research under Section 7 of the Animal Health Act of South Africa (2002)

Should you consider a project related to the Mnisi Community Programme Mnisi Programme Coordinator or Hluvukani Animal Health Centre, Dr Greg Simpson at gjgsimpson@gmail.com please consult with the  before applying to HHWRS.

All of the above documentation should be sent to Jeanette Wentzel, cc Dr Richard Burroughs and Marie Watson,  in electronic format (ie scanned copies of original documents in case of signed letters).  Original documents may occasionally be requested in hard copy.

Research applications will be screened by the HHWRS Research Working Group and once permission has been granted to use the HHWRS facilities, these can be booked by contacting Marie Watson or Jeanette Wentzel.

Please submit research applications well in advance (3-6 months recommended) of commencement of research activities.  Please take this into consideration if seasonal parameters are estimated or influence your study.

International students should make sure that they have the required work/study permits and medical insurance before coming to South Africa.  Find more info here































 


Full Research Proposal

A full research proposal is required with every application to do research at or from HHWRS.  If the project will be registered at the UP, the proposal should follow the UP guidelines for a research protocol.  Non-UP project proposal should contain at least the information required in these guidelines, even if in a different format.

Approval letter of relevant Research Committee

Projects registered in the UP should supply a letter of approval from the relevant Faculty Research Committee.

Projects registered outside the UP should provide a letter of approval of the full research proposal by their academic institution or governing body.

Please submit a scanned copy of the original (signed) approval letter with the rest of the required documentation

Ethical approval for research involving animal subjects

Any project involving animal subjects has to be approved by the Animal Use and Care Committee (AUCC) of the UP (also projects not registered with the UP).  Projects involving animal subjects with ethics approval from a body other than the AUCC, still has to apply to the AUCC.  Include any ethical approval letters from your own institution with your application to the AUCC.

Ethical approval for research involving human subjects

Please contact the Mnisi Programme Coordinator to determine which UP ethics committee's approval  your project has to be subjected to.

Please submit a scanned copy of the original (signed) approval letter
from the relevant ethics committee with the rest of the required documentation

Approval to conduct research under Section 7 of the Animal Health Act of South Africa (2002)

Please be aware that the HHWRS falls within the endemically infected zone of various controlled animal diseases.  It is therefore recommended that ALL projects be submitted for approval by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Section 7, Animal Health Act, South Africa (2002)

7. Limitations on investigations, experiments and research with, and manufacture and evaluation of, certain products

 1)        Subject to subsection (2), no person may without the written authority of the national executive officer or contrary to any condition imposed by him or her on such authority-

a)        conduct any investigation, experiment or research with any vaccine, serum, toxin, antitoxin, antigen or other biological product that consists of or originates wholly or partially from any animal or thing;

b)        use any vaccine, serum, toxin, antitoxin, antigen or other biological product referred to in paragraph (a) for the manufacture or evaluation of a product or remedy used for or intended to be used for the testing, diagnosis, prevention, treatment or cure of any animal disease or parasite or for the maintenance or improvement of the health, growth, production or working capacity of any animal; or

c)         for the purpose of any investigation, experiment or research referred to in paragraph (u) or for the manufacture or evaluation of a product or remedy referred to in paragraph (b) infect or contaminate any animal or thing with any animal disease or parasite.

 2)        Subsection (1) does not apply to any substance in so far as it is controlled under the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act, 1965 (Act No. 101 of 1965) and the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947 (Act No. 36 of 1947).
