The children’s theatre production for 2013 by the Department of Drama of the University of Pretoria is the well-known tale of Pinocchio. Come and share in the adventures of Pinocchio, the cute, naughty wooden marionette carved by the marionette maker Ghepetto from a very special log of wood.
There is a mysterious Blue Fairy that appears to Pinocchio in many different guises to warn him about dangerous things. Meet his duck friend Gina who tries to look after him, the sly fox and the dim-witted cat who want to steal all his money, and the bad-tempered policeman who chases him.

Drama hosts major Lessac workshop

The Drama Department at the University of Pretoria is currently hosting the first Intensive Lessac Kinesensic Workshop on African soil in collaboration with the Lessac Training and Research Institute of New York. It is a three-week (126-hour) intensive training course and kinesensic programme in voice and bodywork for actors, teachers, performers, directors, broadcasters, presenters, therapists and advanced theatre students. Having kicked off on 6 January, the training aims to enhance communication, human interaction and creativity. In theatre it promotes intelligibility, vocal variety, contrast and emotional expressivity.

The Drama Department proudly hosts the 12th annual Krękvars Student Arts Festival, which runs from 23 to 28 July 2012 in the Masker and Lier theatres, as well as the Chapel and Studio in the Drama Building. Highlights include the breath-taking "Chasing", director and choreographer Nicola Haskins’s moving portrait of acclaimed poet Ingrid Jonker, and visiting director Wendy Mortimer’s (Indiana State University) "The Alchemy of Desire/Dead Man’s Blues", written by Caridad Svich. Both shows were performed to packed audiences at the recent Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Prof Coetzee interviews Sotho cultural activist, actress, playwright, poet and director Napo Masheane, a guest director in the Drama department. Napo was born in Soweto (Gauteng) and grew up in Qwaqwa (Free State). The recipient of a number of scholarships and awards, she made her mark as a multi-skilled theatre artist on both international and national stages. A founding member of Feela Sista! Spoken Word Collective, she is also the director of her own company, Village Gossip Productions. Currently, she is one of the few black women directors in the country.

Kilnerpark Security estimated that the programmes played for up to 8 000 learners.

As in previous years, the 2009 Krękvars Students Arts Festival, hosted by the Drama Department, will be remembered as a resounding success. The official opening was attended by representatives of the Czech Republic embassy and the Brazilian embassy, as well as representatives from other local drama departments. In addition, familiar industry figures such as Eloise Cupido, Melt Sieberhagen (“District 9”), Hannes Brummer (“Kompleks”) and Shareen Swart (“7de Laan”) were also in attendance. Sieberhagen and Brummer brought their side-splitting stand-up comedy show, “The Flying Dutchman”, to the festival.
