Historical and Heritage Studies
Ms Karina Sevenhuysen
BA Hons, MA (Pretoria) M.Akad.SA

I started in the Department in January 1990. I teach South African history (Segregation and Apartheid), as well as Russian and German history (Hitler, Lenin and Stalin). I am also lecturing Cultural History (Culture of urbanisation; 19th century South African material and spiritual culture and 20th century South African architecture as a cultural product of the relation between man and environment.

My teaching philosophy is to guide students towards a better understanding of historical events and processes, and human behaviour. I also try to handle students with a balance between discipline and empathy.

My research focuses on black urbanisation, black housing and the creation of infrastructure in black townships prior to WWII. I am especially interested in the ideologies and philosophies that shaped black townships and am using GIS applications to understand these aspects better.
