 Our Vision

The Water Institute of the University of Pretoria strives to be:

  An internal platform at the University of Pretoria (UP) from where the excellence of all UP individuals and teams involved in water-related research is supported and strengthened;
  The institutional face of water-related research, teaching and learning, and community engagement at UP that facilitates coordination at all levels;
  The UP coordinating entity that cooperates, through fundamental and goal directed research, with national government, local communities and other stakeholders to find solutions for water-related challenges, encourage technology transfer and promote human resource development;
  A facilitator of UP research partnerships and alliances with entities in South Africa, in Africa and abroad to address major issues related to water in Africa.

 

 Our Mission

T
he Water Institute of the University of Pretoria will achieve its vision statements by the following actions:

  Consolidating and building on the strengths of UP in order to extend its excellence in water-related research, teaching and learning and community engagement;
  Investing in clear focus areas of research, technology transfer, teaching and learning, community engagement and capacity building, in line with the overall strategy of UP;
  Ensuring the generation of adequate new funding for water research, teaching and learning, and community engagement by establishing new partnerships and alliances, as well as strengthening those already in existence;
  Undertaking water research, teaching and learning, and community engagement that responds to the needs of its partners, and use this as a mechanism to enhance the quality of life of all South Africans;
  Creating high level human resource capacity by involving students in water-related research, teaching and learning, and community engagement projects;
  Transferring expertise and technology through conferences, seminars, training, training events (e.g. workshops and short courses), publications and other appropriate avenues;
  Developing African oriented partnerships, initiatives and mechanisms for the transfer of knowledge and skills in respect of the management, conservation and sustainable use of water resources;
  Involving public and private strategic partners in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere.
