PUBLIC SERVICES

Professional museums are judged by the range, quality and courtesy with which their stated services are delivered to the public. The UP Museums services are twofold: there is an internal focus on collections – their acquisition and conservation; and an external customer- or audience-centred focus on disseminating information about the collections and their context. The UP Museums deliver a multitude of services: permanent and temporary exhibitions, formal and informal education services such as tours to diverse audiences of all ages and different cultures, popular and scholarly publications, research services, lectures and research access (including the use of an archive), collection and information about collections and loans, as well as conservation project services, and objects restoration services for the public. On a consultancy level, specialist services are provided on artworks and expertise in the fields of art, art history, Southern African archaeology, ceramics and sculpture, and heritage objects conservation. The museums also offer undergraduate and postgraduate training services as part of the academic programme, as well as temporary volunteerships every now and again.
