Frequently asked questions:

What time do classes start?

Classes start on Mondays at 08:30 (except for the Occupational Health modules) and the rest of the week at 08:00.

What time do classes end?

Generally classes end at 16:30.

How do I access the electronic exam papers?

All SHSPH students can ask for the password from the Academic Programme Coordinator.

How do I register for a second (and subsequent year of study)?

Your registration form and instructions are sent to you by the University. If you make an electronic payment, you are welcome to make corrections to the registration form, sign the form and add at least one module before faxing it to student administration, Mr Reuben Sehone, on 012 354 1750. He can register you as soon as the payment reflects on your account. International students should follow the additional steps as set out in the document/s that the University sends you.

Students who wish to register in person, can pay their registration fees at the cashier at the Faculty (Level 3) and then leave their signed form with Reuben. Please remember that all payments take 24 hours to be reflected on your record.

What are the Friday Public Health Seminars about?

These take place every Friday from 08:00-09:00 in Bophelo Room (5. 19). The purpose of the seminars is to expose both academic staff as well as students to a presentation by either staff, students or outside experts on an issue of interest to public health. Students can present protocols or results from their research, staff can present on their research or a journal article can be discussed, whereas outside experts normally present on their research and institution where they are from.

Attending the seminars is compulsory for all students as it forms part of the academic programme for the week, irrespective of the module which is being attended.

What happens if my assignment is handed in late?

Students may apply for an extension for the submission. This must be applied for via e-mail and is at the discretion of the module coordinator. Remember that even if this is approved, 10% may still be deducted from the final mark. ALL assignments must be handed in for marking by the end of the academic year in which the module was registered for as all requirements must be met in the SAME academic year.

How do I apply for an extension of study period?

The University of Pretoria sends the request for extension of study form automatically to students at the end of their study period.

Students need to contact the secretariat of the Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) (Mrs Sam Hodgson at 012 354 1472) to add their names to the agenda so that they can present their progress and plans for completion in person. Dates for the meetings can be found under the link for current students.

The student has to be accompanied by his/her supervisor and is responsible to arrange their participation.

The student must bring the following to the meeting:

  • completed registration form;
  • completed request for extension of study form, a written action plan including deadlines for research and plans to meet outstanding requirements (modules, exams, etc). If modules are outstanding the student must present a letter from their employer which clearly indicates that the student will be released to participate in all outstanding modules;

if the progress and completion plan are found acceptable the AAC will set the provisions for registration. Only provisional registration will be granted based on these conditions and students who do not meet the conditions will be informed that their studies have been terminated

Further enquiries can be made to the Academic Advisory Secretariat.

Does it make a difference in which order I write the Core (PHM 871) and Track (PHM 872) exams?

No, as long as you meet the requirements for that particular exam. There are many students who write PHM 872 before they are able to write PHM 871.

How do I access past exam papers?

A repository of past exam papers is available via the library website (http://www.library.up.ac.za/).

On the site complete the course code for the exam in the e-exam catalogue search field and all available exam papers will be listed.

Why don’t I get a new PG book for every academic year?

The SHSPH PG book is a guide for students detailing the curriculum and administrative issues that pertain to the initial registration for a degree / diploma.

It is to be read in conjunction with the Faculty Regulations for the same year of registration.

Should you lose your copy you can request a electronic version from shsph@up.ac.za, when doing so please make sure you specify the year of registration
