Exchange and study abroad students

Exchange and study abroad students are students who register for a short period of time (six to twelve months) at UP. These students will still receive their degrees at their home institutions. There is, however, a big difference between these types of students.

Exchange students - Spends a short time at UP under the auspice of an active collaboration agreement between their home institution and UP.

Study abroad students - Spends a short time at UP but does not fall under the auspices of a collaboration agreement between their home institution and UP.

A collaboration agreement is an agreement between two tertiary institutions that enable students from both institutions to study across national borders. This means that a student from the one institution can study for a semester or two at the other institution and actually get credits for courses passed.

Academic departments must agree beforehand that they will credit students for subjects/modules/courses passed at the relevant institution.

Application procedure	Initial contact Prospective exchange/study abroad students' first enquiry is at the International Student Division. · The specialist consultant sends application form. · The student returns the application form by email/fax to the specialist consultant. Must submit Exchange student submits the following documentation to the ISD: · UP application form for study · certified copy of passport · certified copy of transcripts or results · release letter from home institution granting permission for the exchange, study abroad or elective student at UP and also brief explanation of proposed course at UP Application · application is captured manually by the ISD · DMC will download data on LibertyNet · ISD will refer application to faculty for admission Admission Admission is done by the relevant faculty after credit transfers have been negotiated between the home and the host institutions. Admission communication All communication with the home institution and the student is done by the ISD. This will enable you to apply for a study permit in your home country at a South African Embassy or High Commission or at a South African Foreign Mission in a country close to you.
Closing dates	First semester closing date: 31 September (January - June) Second semester closing date: 31 March (July - December)
Financial implications	On institutional level agreements, tuition fees are normally waved. All other payments will depend on the specifics of the agreement between the institutions.	All expenses including tuition fees, accommodation and living costs will be for the student's account.

Medical aid	These international students enter South Africa on study permits and must subscribe to a medical scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act of South Africa. Academic transcripts	The ISD will ensure that the academic transcripts are delivered to the home institution after · the student's account has been fully settled; · an exit interview has been held with student; and · all other UP policies of departure have been adhered to.
Accommodation	Accommodation is provided to students by the University of Pretoria. Arrangements in this regard will be made by the Client Service Centre. Please enquire from the international consultant responsible for your region as indicated below.
