Master's in Information Technology (Stream B: Carnegie)
The Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria, with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, offers a fully funded specialised two year coursework degree at Masters level in Information Technology (M.IT degree) as from January 2011. The third intake for 2013 will open in July 2012.

Aim of programme:
To empower the next generation of library and information professionals within sub-Saharan African countries with knowledge and skills to apply modern information and communication technologies (ICTs).
To build capacity amongst middle managers involved in managing ICT or working in ICT-intensive environments in academic libraries and faculty members at Library and Information Science schools to support the next generation of academics and researchers in Africa.

The programme will consist of coursework as well as a mini-dissertation based on applied research related to the individual’s own institution, each component carrying 50% of the credits of the programme.

IT Systems in libraries
Web Trends in the library
Digital repositories
Knowledge Management
Facilitating information retrieval and information use
Network technologies
The Knowledge Society and international librarianship
Lectures will take place in block periods, consisting of visits over four semesters. These visits will include two block visits to the University of Pretoria, South Africa, one block visit to another leading institution in Africa and one block visit to a leading institution in the United States of America.
Technology-mediated distance education
This will consist of real-time video- and/or audio-conferencing from the University of Pretoria and partner institutions, podcasts that can be downloaded, interaction via the University of Pretoria Learning Management System, etc. Reliable Internet access is therefore a prerequisite.
Lecturers for the programme will be from the School of Information Technology at the University of Pretoria as well as from selected Carnegie partner institutions in South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, the United States of America and guest lecturers from industry.
What are the selection criteria?
Selection of candidates for this fully funded programme will be highly competitive and will be based inter alia on the following criteria:
Current qualifications – at least an Honours degree in Library and Information Science / a four year degree in Library and Information Science / a Masters degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree from a reputable University;
Past academic performance;
Proficiency in English;
Work experience, current job description and responsibilities;
A recommendation letter from the current employer / line manager; and
A commitment from the current employer that they will make time available for the employee to devote to his / her studies, including the visits to the University of Pretoria / abroad every semester.
In addition, prospective students will be required to write an essay explaining why they would like to participate in the programme, what they hope to learn from the programme, why they should be selected for the programme and what they hope to contribute to the programme.
Who will be considered?
The programme is aimed at information professionals working in libraries at tertiary academic institutions or in Library and Information Science schools.
Candidates must be involved in ICT management, working in ICT-intensive environments or teaching ICT related courses at tertiary level.
Preference will be given to applications from Carnegie partner institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
Only students from Anglophone sub-Saharan African countries will be considered for selection purposes.

Funded/ Non-funded Programme
Funded: Students from Carnegie partner institutions and countries will be considered for the funded programme. These countries are;
South Africa;
Uganda;
Ghana;
Tanzania; and
Nigeria.
Non-funded: Anyone who do not qualify for the funded programme may apply for the non-funded programme if they meet the above mentioned criteria and provided they, or their institutions, can pay the full amount of the fees themselves (see link to course and application criteria).
