World Cup fever hits UP  

UP is ready for kick-off. In addition to being the host to the Argentinean national football team, the University’s residences are also being made available for basic accommodation, and park-and-ride facilities will operate from the LC de Villiers sport centre to Loftus Versfeld for the matches that are being played in the capital city.   Read more...

Installation of UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, was inaugurated on 16 April 2010 at a function attended by more than a thousand dignitaries, business leaders and academics. Specialised clinic in auditory neuropathy launched

The Department of Communication Pathology at UP has launched a new specialised clinic for comprehensive care in auditory neuropathy. Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a complex auditory disorder that poses a significant developmental risk to spoken language in the long term.   Read more...

The University of Pretoria honoured its exceptional academic achievers and young researchers at its annual Exceptional Academic Achiever Awards in March 2010. TuksBaja goes international

Engineering students have been participating in the South African Sasol Baja SAE Competition since its inception 13 years ago. Last year, the TuksBaja team was the winners in two of the five categories, and ended in eighth place overall. This year, these students are preparing to not only compete in the national competition, but also to take part in the American Baja in May next year.   Read more...

Breyten Breytenbach visits UP campus  

Breyten Breytenbach, the renowned Afrikaans poet and artist, visited UP on 5 March 2010 at the invitation of Prof Willie Burger, head of the Department of Afrikaans. He did not deliver a formal lecture, but answered questions and spoke on various topics in conversation with Prof Burger. Read more... 

UP composer represents South Africa

Dr Alexander Johnson, a senior lecturer at UP and renowned composer, will represent South Africa in the world’s first Commonwealth Pianorama. It will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from 27 to 29 November 2010. Dr Johnson’s piano piece, Miniature Incantation, will be performed by Sean Jackson, a brilliant young pianist from the UK.   Read more...  

Renowned alumnus and financial expert visits UP

As part of the celebration of 90 years since the founding of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, the faculty hosted a workshop on financial risks and their impact on financial institutions. Tukkie students rewarded for excellent work

Two students – one from the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and the other from the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences – were recently rewarded for remarkable achievements. Ntuthuko Tsokodibane was this year’s winner in the 37th Nedbank and Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition and Mmathapelo Selomane received the award for the best student from the South African Institute for Engineering and Environmental Geologists (SAIEG).     Read more...

Take part in the Kya Rosa writing competition

TuksAlumni, the UP Archives, and the departments of Afrikaans, English and Historical and Heritage Studies invite students and alumni to participate in a writing competition with the theme Kya Rosa: from fact to fiction. Prizes of R3 000 for the first place and R1 000 for two runner-up positions are up for grabs.  Entries should be submitted before 23 September 2010.
